And North Austin, just by Lakeline Mall, by the DPS office where people stand in line for an hour before it opens every single morning. And we’re also located in South Congress. I’m sorry, South Austin on South Congress and Dripping Springs by the high school. So that little location is adorable.

If you haven’t been to dripping Springs in a minute, it is a totally different place. There’s probably a thousand restaurants there now.

There’s three lanes or something. It’s ridiculous. There on 71 there’s restaurants everywhere. So truck it on down to Dripping Springs and you get your prostate checked.

Well, we love bringing you this show. We talk about a variety of different topics. And today, you know, towards here the end of the year, really wanted to kind of emphasize what kinds of changes that men like to try to make at the beginning of the year, how a physician can help you make those changes, how we get our practice can help you make those changes, you know, kind of give you some information on what can you expect from a wellness type clinic in terms of helping you achieve your goals. So, Donna, what do you think some of the top resolutions that people make at the beginning of the year?

Number one, lose weight.

Lose weight. Right. Now losing weight is a tough bird for a lot of people, myself included. It’s something that is the, in our philosophy here in the practice is the central tenant to virtually every health problem that you’re going to have. Whether you have high blood pressure, whether you have diabetes, whether you have obstructive sleep apnea, even if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and about to go for pre-op-ing for cancer, even if it seems completely unrelated–a skin disease like psoriasis, or other autoimmune kind of conditions–we consider being at a healthy weight one of the most important primary things that you can do. And all throughout my practice, what really irritated me about many places to go get treated, without the fault of the doctor, is that they would tell a patient to lose weight and then sent them on their own.

And I think that it’s because, for every 10 patients that you sit down and really explain it, weight loss program too, and give them advice, maybe only one takes your advice and does it. And so you can either look at the 9 and say, “Man, I really failed,” or look at the one and say, “Wow, we succeeded.” And I think that in our practice we really look at that 1 or that 3 out of 10 that we can make a real lasting difference in. And so for that reason, we do have an in-house nutritionist that’s a registered dietician that we have on staff that will see you here in our office and we’ll be able to conjoin whatever we’re going to do from the medical standpoint along with that diet program. We’re big fans of a managed diet, ideal protein we offer here. We’re also big fans of the ketogenic diet, which is kind of a sugar avoidance diet. You’ve probably heard of keto, but what we do, special is what we call our managed Keto. We actually do tests during your program to make sure that you’re losing weight. And then we have a variety of other things. Maybe you don’t need to lose weight, but maybe you need to figure out if foods that you’re eating are causing you sickness.

Right. And we do a food allergy test that’s amazing. So if you’re going on a diet, I recommend the food allergy test.

Dr. Mistry: 4:16

Yeah, because we actually had a patient that we put on Keto for some…

Donna Lee: 4:21
…and he was allergic to meat.

Dr. Mistry: 4:21
…he was allergic to meat! Or the guy or the guy or the guy that started brewing beer and he was allergic to gluten, or the guy…you know, people that are trying to make changes in their lifestyle, I’m not sure making beer was a good diet choice, but food allergy testing, it costs less than $300. We give you, the readouts are amazing. We have these amazing nutrogenomics tests as well, which tell you on a genetic level what enzymes your body’s making that allows you to metabolize certain foods optimally. It’s much more than just saying, okay, good luck, and today with the fact that we have apps on our phone to help us track what we’re eating and what our activities are, it’s really a a great time to take a more active role in your weight loss.

Right. And I think a lot of people say they’re, they have celiac disease when they had never been tested. The example that I think of is my stepson and my husband both did this food allergy test and it turns out that my stepson is more prone to celiac type disease issues and my husband just has a gluten sensitivity. So celiac disease isn’t really probably as common as we talk about it. I mean, that’s how I see it from our patients, too. So from the tests…

Exactly, and wheat isn’t necessarily your enemy, right?

…from the test, you can tell how sensitive you are to gluten or if you’re super crazy sensitive to gluten. So anyway, do that at the beginning of the year, let’s all lose weight together.

And you can do that for a fairly inexpensive price, and it’s something that we’ll do as part of kind of an evaluation here. Other things that we consider part of an evaluation are going to be basic laboratory tests, basic physical exam, and although you can get any of these things done at a, your primary care doctor’s location, you know, I’m encouraging you guys to kind of think about what is that next step that maybe a traditional family practitioner can’t provide because they’re just not set up for it–they’re trying to see 50 patients a day. They’re not going to be in a position to necessarily offer you specialty testing that specifically relates to you. And that’s kind of the stuff that if you can think of what you’d like and certainly we offer a lot of those things.

Right? And you can come in and see our registered dietician, Robert, who’s amazing, and you don’t have to see the urologist that day. You can just come in for a consultation with Robert.

I think just staying healthy.

I think stopping smoking is a big one.

Donna Lee: 6:46
Oh yeah, that’s huge. Stop vaping, y’all.

Dr. Mistry: 6:46
You know, the stopping of smoking is another example where I think that a lot of physicians have just given up, right? Because again, you’re gonna tell 10 people to stop smoking. They just, you know, it’s an addictive trait. They’re not gonna stop.

Donna Lee: 7:03
Unless you say, “You will drop dead if you don’t stop smoking.”

Dr. Mistry: 7:07
I don’t think that that also motivates them. We have patients that smoke so much that…

…they’re scared to stop smoking.

Dr. Mistry: 7:15
…we’re almost scared to stop them right before surgery, because we’re afraid that the changes in their lung physiology will make them less of a candidate.

The stopping of smoking can be done through a number of different medications. Chantix is one that we use here in the office at times. We also have counselors on staff–we forgot about that as a provider, don’t we? We have counselors on staff that can help you kind of work through some different aspects of that addictive personality trait, and really help you get over that. So, stopping smoking, I think drinking’s another similar one. We do not necessarily prescribe medications here to help people stop drinking, but we have a number of resources. You know, I think that the thinking about over-use of alcohol has really changed. So it’s not just you’re an alcoholic or you’re not an alcoholic. There’s something that we now recognize in the medical profession as kind of an alcohol use disorder where you can be highly functional, have no problems in your life, but probably drink a little too much, and maybe need some resources. There’s some great podcasts on this that, you know, help a lot of patients. There are medications that can be used. Counseling can be used. I mean, there’s a difference between not doing anything or going through a 12 step, you know, Alcoholics Anonymous program. There’s a middle road to help people deal with alcohol use disorder, and a lot of people use the month of January as a “dry January.” Have you heard of that?

A dry January? Sounds like a terrible problem.

That means you don’t drink in January. Duh.

And there’s that too.

I think that’s going to be one of the, maybe one of the first little people that we put into this.

Yeah, I was thinking about female hormones, and you’re talking about a dry January for alcohol.

I guess dry January means something different in female urology. So, this is going to be our last show of the year. We’re going to be moving to Saturdays.
