Fun With Frenulums: Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee Discuss Issues Common With the Frenulum of the Penis

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Armor Men’s Health Hour with Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee.

Dr. Mistry:

Hello and welcome to the Armor Men’s Health Hour. I’m Dr. Mistry, your host, here as always with my cohost Donna Lee.

Donna Lee:

Hello, everybody! Happy day!

Dr. Mistry:

Happy days, everybody. Hopefully people are fairing well and staying healthy at this crazy time in our lives. We are open for business.

Donna Lee:

For now.

Dr. Mistry:

For now. That’s right. I am a board certified…

Donna Lee:

Until we become a bar and then we’ll be shut down.

Dr. Mistry:

Then we’ll be shut down. I’m a board certified urologist. This is a men’s health show. And this is brought to you by our urology practice NAU Urology Specialists. We’ve been serving the Austin area since 2007.

Donna Lee:

That is 13 years ago.

Dr. Mistry:

That’s a long time ago.

Donna Lee:

That is a long time ago.

Dr. Mistry:

We really growed up in that time.

Donna Lee:

Did we?

Dr. Mistry:

That’s right. One small office in Round Rock, and now we’re bigger.

Donna Lee:

We’re all over the place. In North Austin and South Austin and Dripping Springs.

Dr. Mistry:

Also at Hymeadow, it’s called our Lakeline office. And an amazing practice, wonderful providers, excellent opportunity for us to serve the patients in the Austin area for their urologic needs. We have put this show together really to showcase what I feel is a very unique approach to urology and a unique approach to patient care.

Donna Lee:

Yep. And we get lots of questions every week. Remember back in the day when we’d get a one or two, and then we were like, “What are we gonna talk about?”

Dr. Mistry:

That’s right. We were worried that we were going to be a one trick pony, but men’s health is such an expansive subject area. There’s so many overlaps between general women’s health and comprehensive men’s health. We love your questions. It’s what keeps the show going. We just absolutely love doing this show. It’s been a year now. Just amazing feedback. You can catch this if you miss the show on our podcast, wherever you podcast, and it’s free, informative, and something that we’re very proud of.

Donna Lee:

We’re podcastable.

Dr. Mistry:

We’re podcastable.

Donna Lee:

Gosh, we can hear him anywhere. I hear that we’re so famous that people can’t stand it anymore.

Dr. Mistry:

I don’t think…

Donna Lee:

They’re stopping you in the street at the red lights.

Dr. Mistry:

I mean, it’s really the autographs.

Donna Lee:

Is that the part that slows you down?

Dr. Mistry:

Yeah, that’s right.

Donna Lee:

Oh boy. So many podcasts, so little time.

Dr. Mistry:

Well, Donna Lee, why don’t you tell people about our practice?

Donna Lee:

Oh, you can call us during the week at (512) 238-0762. We’re getting so many people that come in, they just want to say hi to you and me, and it’s really sweet. We’re happy to do that. Our email address for these amazing questions is armormenshealth@gmail.com. You can also check out our website armormenshealth.com. There’s also an inquiry section there and we get every one of the questions and we answer them anonymously on air. We do have to say hellos and shout outs to our friends though.

Dr. Mistry:

Yes.

Donna Lee:

Our newest one is Donald.

Dr. Mistry:

Alright, Donald.

Donna Lee:

He’s been listening to KLBJ for 15 years and he listens to our show every Saturday and every Sunday. And we had a lovely talk together.

Dr. Mistry:

Yes. I can’t wait to take care of him. He’s going to become a new patient of ours. And, we have gotten so many patients from the topics we talk about on the radio. At this time it may seem uncomfortable to come in to see a new doctor. And if you are looking for a second opinion and want to just maybe do a telemedicine conference, it’s something that’s allowed and paid for by your insurance. If it’s a second opinion on prostate cancer, there will be no charge to you, and we can talk about high intensity focused ultrasound or robotic surgery or radiation or watchful waiting or nutrition or anything that may be kind of complicating your prostate cancer journey. And even if you’ve already been treated, if you’re having complications or questions about how to follow you, these are things that would be a great second opinion for prostate cancer kind of talk. There’s so many prostate cancer patients here in Austin and central Texas. But it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, if you want a second opinion, give us a call.

Donna Lee:

That’s right. And I think because of our size, I think that makes us a little more special since we’re the second largest. There’s a big mega group when we’re getting a lot of those patients, because I think we take it a little bit more…

Dr. Mistry:

We can’t say that on the radio.

Donna Lee:

We can’t?

Dr. Mistry:

No, no, no. They’ll get mad at us. We don’t want to be squashed like a bug. Don’t worry! We’re of no threat to anyone! We’re calming just sitting here, minding our own business, practicing great urology. But we love your questions, they’re what keep this practice going and the show going. So Donna Lee, why don’t you shoot us with a question?

Donna Lee:

We have a wonderful question from a listener. The subject line is “Penis Banjo String Issue.” I hadn’t heard of that. “Dr. Mystery…” Is that from Deliverance, right? “Dr. Mistry, heard you on the radio talking about men’s issues and wanted to ask is there a way to fix my penis continuously nicking and tearing. And then he put in parentheses (very small) where my penis skin from the shaft connects to the head underneath?”

Dr. Mistry:

This is a very common condition that we treat here in the office. When a man is circumcised or not circumcised, there’s a little piece of tissue right underneath the hole, or the meatus of the head of the penis that connects to the skin underneath. It’s on the undersurface of the penis. It’s called the frenulum. We have a few frenulums, in fact. There’s a similar frenulum that connects the bottom of our tongue to the bottom of our mouth. That’s a frenulum.

Donna Lee:

Oh. Oh yes.

Dr. Mistry:

My son actually has a tight frenulum and they call that “tongue tied.” That’s what a tongue tied….We didn’t even know it until he was nine. Now we don’t know what to do with it.

Donna Lee:

Oh. My husband has an enlarged uvula, and he tells everybody. He likes to brag about that.

Dr. Mistry:

Oh my goodness. It probably caused his heart attack, probably causes sleep apnea. Anyway, it’s nothing to be that impressed about. So, between uvulas and frenulums…so there’s a frenulum of the penis. That can become torn, especially during intercourse or with erections.

Donna Lee:

Another reason not to have sex.

Dr. Mistry:

Hey, come on. It’s not dangerous. It’s okay. Some people like it. And so what, if that frenulum becomes torn and then scars again repeatedly, then it will become increasingly scarred and will continue to tear. The fix for it takes about, I dunno, six minutes in the office.

Donna Lee:

Really?

Dr. Mistry:

It’s super quick, super easy. Doesn’t hurt.

Donna Lee:

What do you do?

Dr. Mistry:

It’s just, we just cut the band in a longitudinal and then we sew it in a vertical way. It’s one of the most common plastic surgery kind of techniques that are used to elongate the thing, and you know what the best part of it is?

Donna Lee:

No downtime?

Dr. Mistry:

No, that that’s also good. Your penis gets an inch longer.

Donna Lee:

Really?

Dr. Mistry:

No kidding.

Donna Lee:

No.

Dr. Mistry:

Yeah.

Donna Lee:

Oh, I hear the phones ringing right now.

Dr. Mistry:

It’s called a frenuloplasty. It’s something simple and easy. If you have a problem like that….

Donna Lee:

An inch? A whole inch?

Dr. Mistry:

Because it’s banding down. It’s like bringing the head of the penis down. So you’d like pop it up being like a banjo string.

Donna Lee:

Does it make that noise?

Dr. Mistry:

In my mind. There’s very few things I do that gives me that much joy than to give a man that much joy. Right. So, if you have a frenulur or any kind of problem with your circumcised or uncircumcised penis where it’s causing pain or tearing or something like that, it’s absolutely the kind of thing that we take care of here in our office. The frenuloplasty is paid for by insurance. And even if it wasn’t, it’s super cheap. I mean, for less than $250 bucks, you can come in here and get your frenulum cut.

Donna Lee:

Not KLBJ. You have to come to our office.

Dr. Mistry:

That’s correct. You can’t…

Donna Lee:

You can come to the studio and show us your penis.

Dr. Mistry:

You cannot come to the studio. They will be very, very upset.

Donna Lee:

The program directors don’t like that.

Dr. Mistry:

We’re gonna get kicked off this radio station. This frenulur reconstruction is, can be performed by most all urologists, but we do ours in the office. Very little downtime. We do have a restriction from intercourse for about two weeks while the stitch heals.

Donna Lee:

That’s it? It seems to me it’d be longer.

Dr. Mistry:

That’s what we’re trying to get! Hey! Well, before we finish out the segment, do you have any other shorter questions?

Donna Lee:

Not really. We have a lot of questions about testosterone and we have a good one I’d like to address later about why you should pick a urology office instead of a low T center.

Dr. Mistry:

That’s a great question. You know, it’s exactly the same answer that I would give to somebody who is going to this one of those fly by night shockwave therapy places for erectile dysfunction. You know, in the end, when you have a urologic issue, something that affects men’s health and affects you from your head to your toes, you should go to a men’s health or a urologic expert. I say this all the time, don’t get your erectile dysfunction treated by somebody who doesn’t treat erectile dysfunction. If they only do shockwave, and they’re not treating the entire panoply of issues with…

Donna Lee:

Panoply.

Dr. Mistry:

Panoly…monopoly.

Donna Lee:

I love it when you use that word. Panoply.

Dr. Mistry:

I know I use it a lot. But if they don’t, if they don’t treat all of erectile dysfunction from what causes it to all the treatment options all the way through, then you’re not necessarily getting the right thing. You’re just going for one particular product. You know, if you go, you know, to a Toyota dealership, you’re getting a Toyota. You know, you’re not driving out with necessarily with the full information on all the different kinds of products, brands available for erectile dysfunction. So same when it comes to testosterone. You go to a low T clinic because you feel fatigued, but all they’re going to give you is testosterone because that’s what it is. It’s a low T clinic. It’s in the name. So they’re unlikely to be fully comprehensive in terms of your health…

Donna Lee:

Why don’t they call it a high T clinic?

Dr. Mistry:

High T clinic. That’s right. That’s right. That’s right. It reminds me of one of those hospitals in Canada, that’s called the “Hospital for Sick Children.” And I was like, that’s the worst name for hospital, because when you’re going there, you know that you’re sick.

Donna Lee:

And you’re a child.

Dr. Mistry:

And you’re a child.

Donna Lee:

We should, you know, we should call the hospital that around here.

Dr. Mistry:

“Rainbow Healthiness, Happiness Hospital.” It’s a mental health clinic.

Donna Lee:

The “You’re Screwed Hospital.” That’s a terrible name for a hospital.

Dr. Mistry:

That’s right. So come on in for our high T clinic. We’d love to, we’d love to take care of you, you know? That’s what we’re going to call us, you know? That’s why we’re a wellness organization. We have nutrition, pelvic floor, physical therapy and biomechanics. We have four wonderful physician providers, four excellent physician assistant and a physician at center providers, sex therapy and just, you know, from soup to nuts, a place that’s going to take care of your…

Donna Lee:

Soup to nuts.

Dr. Mistry:

Oh boy.

Donna Lee:

Do we need to discuss that?

Dr. Mistry:

Oh no, we’re gonna get in trouble for that one.

Donna Lee:

I don’t think I’ve ever heard that.

Dr. Mistry:

Well, Donna, how do people get hold of us?

Speaker 3:
